Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness Review--#NotMyWong
I love Marvel as much as anyone else, but I’ve got some issues with Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness
First, I think it’s worth mentioning that Marvel/Disney has done something that no other steaming service has been able to do yet: they’ve forced the casual fan to either subscribe to Disney+ or be left confused and asking themselves how we got here in the middle of the movie. If you didn’t watch WandaVision, you will be missing a lot of important details when watching Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness and will probably get a bit lost. If you haven’t seen either yet, stop reading and go watch WandaVision; you can thank me later.
I wholeheartedly believe Marvel dropped the ball by not having WandaVision finish this week instead of Moon Knight. I understand the movie was pushed from when it was first to be released, but Marvel should have moved some things around to have WandaVision come out as close to Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness as possible. For one, I watched it so long ago, I definitely forgot some important pieces of the series. Second, I can’t remember any other time a movie had the unique opportunity to build hype and excitement with a series that directly ties into and prepares the viewers for the movie that and would have had the series finale the day before the movie premiere. Imagine watching the finale of Wanda on Wednesday and being able to go see the real finale in theaters on Thursday. If we would have just watched WandaVision this week, I would have a completely different feeling about this movie, but we watched it 5 months ago. When everything else seems so deliberate and planned out, I’m disappointed in Marvel for depriving us that experience.
Now, onto my bigger problem. Wong…we need to talk about Wong. SPOILER ALERTI think it is entirely off brand for Wong to have so easily given Wanda the location of the Darkhold spells. Everything Wong has ever said or done has painted the picture that he would risk his life to protect the world/multiverse against all threats and evil. He is the Sorcerer Supreme which means he carries the intimidating weight of protecting the world by maintaining a mystical barrier that guards against invasions from other realms. Not only was Wanda the greatest threat to this world, she was the greatest threat to the entire multiverse. We have been led to believe that Wong would have done everything in his power to keep Wanda, or anyone else, from destroying the multiverse.
Sara had literally just sacrificed herself for Wong by stabbing the Darkhold, even though she knew it was going to kill her. She told Wong it couldn’t be him, and I have to imagine that was because she understood he is too important and must stay alive to protect us all. Immediately after Sara was incinerated, Wanda picks up 4 sorcerers (that we all thought were already dead) and tortured them for all of 10 seconds before Wong spilled his guts. He told her the Darkhold was just a copy and literally transported her to Mount Wundagore, which was the worst place he could have taken her. I refuse to believe real Wong would have risked the fate of the entire multiverse for 4 sorcerers. My Wong would have died before he would have given her one piece of information that could have harmed the multiverse. Wong has been by the book since inception, and if he would have died sacrificing himself to save us, I would have cried. He has come to represent integrity, courage and honor, and he let us down.
I hope to God this Wong was a Skrull.
